Movies & Cooking

I watched the movie Julie &Julia the 2009 American biographical comedy, starring Meryl Streep, Amy Adams.

I actually watched it more than once because Meryl Streep deserves an Oscar for that role in Julie & Julia – chapeau!

I was inspired by Julie Powell to cook, well not all 524 recipes in a year, but something like 150 recipes listed from all the books I have.

The thing was, either I use my cooking books or I donate them. So I went through most of them and listed all the recipes that I want to do, or do better.

I made it for a family dinner, and I was quite pleased that, although a labor-intensive kind of preparation and cooking time, with one dish meat and vegetables are all included. I thought it was well worth the time.

Sometimes in fact I needed to read more than one version of a recipe to then settle for one.
The Bœuf Bourguignon however was done following the Julia Child recipe, and it came out delicious the first try.

Paired with a good red wine, possibly the same used for the recipe, it was a winner.
I already got a few done. The Branzino with potatoes was particularly good – the tender fish paired perfectly with potatoes.

And today I experimented with meringues. I think meringues are not difficult to make but the number one must-have is a good oven. And I just have a new one now.

So meringues it was, because my next challenge will be a Pavlova! I am just waiting for the right fresh fruits to use.

Strawberries, berries, figs, kiwi? I am looking into my list which combination is the best.
I love this challenge because it forces me to seek out the freshest, most flavorful produce of the season.

There’s nothing quite like biting into a juicy, ripe tomato or savoring the sweetness of a perfectly ripe peach.

I enjoy experimenting with a variety of spices and herbs, such as cumin, coriander, and thyme, to elevate the flavors of my dishes.

Overall, I am excited to continue my culinary journey and try new recipes. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll even attempt all 524 recipes like Julie Powell!

Stay tuned!

I lived the most part of my life in Washington DC, now in Italy getting to know again my country. Plenty of surprises, for good and bad, and lots of nostalgia for DC.
